EV2, EV3 and How Much Memory You Actually Need
DESFire sits a level above standard MIFARE Classic cards on security. Where Classic cards have been shown to be vulnerable to cloning under the right conditions, DESFire uses AES encryption, mutual authentication and an anti-tear mechanism that protects data if a transaction gets interrupted mid-read. For anything protecting cashless payment, transport ticketing or sensitive access areas, this smart card keeps your data safe.
EV3 is the newer generation, but EV2 remains genuinely capable and is still widely deployed. The right choice usually comes down to what your existing reader infrastructure already supports.
Memory size decides how many applications one card can run. 2K suits straightforward single-purpose access control. 4K and 8K give room for multiple applications on a single credential, which is useful if the same card needs to handle building access, campus services and cashless payment together on one credential, for example.
